Congratulations to first year Hollie Kilroe who is the new National Cross Country schools minor Silver medalist. Hollie is a well established athlete with a substantial haul of medals in both swimming and running. She had four all Ireland medals and has held six Connacht titles.
The National Cross Country Schools Championship was held in Clongowes College, Co. Kildare, on Saturday March 9th. On this day, Hollie was up against the best of the best: previous medal winners from all over the country, from schools in Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connacht. She ran a remarkable 2000 meters race. Her determination was evident when she had to close a big gap to the lead group which she did with about 600 meters remaining. Soon she was in contention and running full pelt, down the finishing straight she caught the race leaders. She crossed the line in a brilliant second place to claim the national silver medal. At the finish line, her mum, dad, Mr. Quinn, other students from our school and coaches were overjoyed with her great run.
The school wishes to congratulate all the other girls who participated in cross country this year, silver medalist for Connacht, Maeve Dervin who is in her last year of school running. Maeve has done so much over the years for running in this school and Roscommon. Congratulations also to first years Iga Berent and Zara Naqvi, second years Abby Gooney and Clara Dunne who also qualified brilliantly for the nationals and Ciara Carr, Wiktoria Katarzynska and Jessica Gannon, the intermediate team who won Gold in the team event in South Connacht- Well done all.
